So you are a prepper?
When I started writing a prepper column a few months ago, I had several folks ask me, "So you're a prepper?"
The question was usually asked like "being a prepper" was some new hobby I had just started.
Actually the topic of preparedness is something that has been a part of my professional life for over 30 years.
Back in the days of being a member of the Army National Guard, when I said I was an NBC NCO, I wasn't talking about the television network, I was talking about being a Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defense Specialist. What I studied, and taught, was first aide and survival after a nuclear, biological, or chemical attack.
I never thought that experience would be relevant decades later, but it does come into play here as I write about the world of being a prepper!
I am a technology professional who is also a freelance writer. Emergency Preparedness is a topic I have written a lot about. It is a topic that most business owners and managers don't take seriously enough.
I don't write for the sake of writing and I don't consider myself a journalist. I consider myself as a teacher who is using writing as my vehicle to educate. While in my writing I try my best to be neutral, I do occasionally take a cynical jab at the world.
I've been trying to separate my writing, and my websites, into two different areas, social issues and technology topics. Being a prepper is one topic that clearly straddles both sides of my interests.
I have been researching many aspects of emergency preparedness over the years. As a technology professional, disaster prevention and disaster recovery are often mentioned topics that are seldom given the attention they deserve.
Living near the Atlantic Ocean, we have our frequent brushes with Nor'easter's and hurricanes, and living on the east coast in the shadows of several nuclear power plants, there is always that fear of a meltdown, which was recently raised after last year's crisis in Japan. Also, I live just a short distance from an Air Force base that would be a potential terrorist target.
As with most of my thoughts and ambitions, I am only limited by the time I have to devote to my writing and websites, as my brain is full of potential ideas and topics to cover.
And by the way, I plan to create a separate website just for prepper resources, so keep in touch, and stay tuned!
